You know how some people come to Kure Beach, fall in love with the idea of a traditional wood fence, and then three years later they're looking at rotted boards and rusted hardware? We've seen it happen more times than we can count. Salt air is relentless.

Vinyl Fencing: The Smart Coastal Choice

Vinyl is honestly the MVP for Kure Beach properties. It doesn't absorb moisture, so you don't get that swelling and warping you see with wood. Salt air can't touch it. UV rays? No problem—quality vinyl is engineered to resist fading even with our intense coastal sun.

And here's what really matters if you've got a vacation home (and more than half the properties in Kure Beach are seasonal)—vinyl requires almost zero maintenance. You can leave for six months, come back, and your fence looks exactly the same. Maybe hose it off occasionally to remove salt buildup. That's it.

Aluminum Fencing: Beautiful and Hurricane-Ready

Aluminum is another excellent choice, especially if you want that classic wrought-iron look without the rust nightmare. It's lightweight but surprisingly strong, and the open picket design actually helps during storms—wind passes right through instead of turning your fence into a sail.

We use powder-coated aluminum that holds up to everything Kure Beach throws at it. Perfect for properties near the pier or along Ocean Front Park where you want curb appeal that lasts.

What We Don't Recommend

Untreated wood? Hard pass. Even pressure-treated pine struggles here without constant maintenance. Plain steel or iron without proper coating? You're basically farming rust. We've seen those fences corrode faster than you'd believe.

If you do want wood for the aesthetic, cedar with proper sealing can work—but understand it's going to need regular attention. Most of our Kure Beach clients go with vinyl or aluminum once they understand the maintenance difference.

Every town's different. Kure Beach has its own quirks.

For one thing, you're working with sandy soil on Pleasure Island. That means posts need proper depth and substantial concrete footings. Too shallow, and the first good storm will have your fence leaning. We've fixed enough of those mistakes to know exactly how deep to go.

Then there's the whole vacation home situation. When more than half the properties sit empty for months at a time, you need fencing that doesn't require constant attention. A fence that looks bad after one season of neglect isn't doing its job. That's another reason vinyl and aluminum make so much sense here—they take care of themselves.

And let's talk about wind. If you were here during the last hurricane season, you know. The open design of aluminum fencing or the proven wind resistance of heavy-duty vinyl (we're talking 43% heavier than standard vinyl) can make the difference between a fence that survives and one that ends up scattered across your yard.

The proximity to Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, the aquarium, and that beautiful historic pier means some properties get more foot traffic and visibility than your typical residential street. The fence you choose says something about your property. We make sure it says the right thing.

You might think a fence is a fence, but coastal installation is a different animal.

Salt air accelerates corrosion on metals. It's not just a little rust—we're talking about serious deterioration that happens faster than it would anywhere inland. That's why hardware matters. Stainless steel fasteners and hinges, or heavy-duty coated hardware. Regular galvanized steel? It's fighting a losing battle here.

Humidity promotes mold and material degradation on anything that can absorb moisture. Wood swells, warps, and eventually rots. Lower-quality composites can actually develop mold problems. The materials we use don't absorb moisture, so these issues never start.

UV exposure is more intense this close to the water. Fencing materials need UV stabilization or they'll fade and become brittle. The vinyl and aluminum we install is specifically rated for coastal sun exposure.

And then there's the wind. Those gusts coming off the ocean put lateral stress on fence posts that you just don't see inland. Installation technique matters—post depth, concrete mix, bracing. We've been doing this long enough to get it right the first time.
